Protests by students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko on the second day got a massive solidarity from market women in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The peaceful protest saw students rally from Cathedral junction, marching through Oba Adesida road, Bishop Fagun road, first bank axis, government house, NEPA, Arakale and climaxed it behind the palace of the Deji of Akure.
The students who were in their hundreds asked the State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu to reverse the hike in the face of prevailing financial challenges in the country.
The governing council had announced an increase in the school fees of students in the university from the range of N23,000 and N27,000 to N120,000 and N200,000.
Speaking with SUNSHINE HERALD, Olawale Ijanusi, Student Union President of AAUA said the students will not relent until the government listens to their demands.
"Today is the continuation of yesterday, and after today, there will still be the continuation of today which is tomorrow. But then, the reason while we are still here, is because of the increment of schools fees in Ondo state, especially Adekunle Ajasin University. We want the state government to be reasonable, we want them to still bring down the hike, as we cannot afford it.
"As you can see, even the crowd that we have today is greater than that of yesterday, and the market women they are solidarising with us now. By tomorrow, they will come out en masse, they will join us and we will have a success in forcing this government in doing the needful.
"The market women after showing solidarity with us all through the protest also protested with leaves to the Deji of Akure's palace and have vowed to shut all markets tomorrow.
This is a fight to finish battle for us" He said
SUNSHINE HERALD, however, have it on good authority that Governor Akeredolu who has not been in town since the process started has returned to the state.
Our source who pleaded not to be named, because he is not authorized to speak with the press on the matter said, the governor will meet with the student leaders this evening following the embarrassment the protests have caused for his government.
