Ondo State Police Commissioner, Gbenga Adeyanju has insisted his men did not shoot any of the protesting students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba contrary to reports on the social media.
Adeyanju made this known while speaking with newsmen at the Governor's office in Akure.
News had gone round on Monday that policemen on the order of the CP shot at the students who were having a peaceful protest.
The students were protesting hike in their school fees from the range of N23,000 and N27,000 to between N120,000 and N200,000.
"To the glory of God, with the cooperation of my Command and the good people of Ondo State, we have managed the crisis very well. If anyone was shot as claimed by the students, you Journalists who are closer to the public would have confirmed it.
"I was there personally and even the whole Command closed since the start of this protest, so as to put the situation under control. Nobody was shot and no one was injured," Adeyanju said.
The police boss also said his men resorted to the use of tear gas in dispersing the students because it's least they could have done in quelling the protest.
"Naturally, it is" Minimum Force". I claim the responsibility. I ordered that tear gas should be used to disperse them, I gave the instruction.
"There was a pregnant woman who was on her way to the hospital to deliver a baby, she was bleeding profusely and she was blocked from moving on and we had to clear the road to enable her get to the hospital before it's too late.
"People who are coming from the bank and those going into the bank were prevented from doing so and as security officers, it behoves on us to clear the road for them, hence the need for the minimum force. I claim the responsibility," he said.
Adeyanju further asked residents of Akure to go about their normal duties without any fear, as the police is up to the task to forestall breakdown of law and order.
