While many were celebrating independence across the country, students
in Akure gathered to ruminate over how to build a nation worthy of it
53years of existence.
The program tagged 'the initiative 1.0' which borders on
politics,technology,business and social development was organized by
Olusola Amusan Company in conjunction with leadership without borders
initiative at the B.T.O Hall,Akure.
One of the speakers, Sam Neye maintained that the student community is
bound to redefine the place of a country in global contention.
Speaking in youthful enthusiasm, he noted that 'any nation that is
relevant today didn't get there as a function of its president but as
a function of the individual citizens of such nation.
Asserting that the real government anyone could rely upon is self
government,he charged every Nigerian youth to take responsibility for
change and refrain from apportioning blames.
Speaking on information technological advancement, Ishola Ayodeji an
ICT (Information and Communication technology) professional bemoaned
the technological backward state of the country.
He stated that 'Nigeria today has no unique personal identification system'
'Nigerians has to spend a lot in order to get access to the internet.
The insufficiency of fund for this has led to misinformation and limit
to available information'
He stressed further that the 21st century illiterate is not someone
who cannot read and write but someone who cannot read online and re
learn.
He enjoined the Nigerian youths to advance their minds to
technological possibilities, erase the Nigerian factor in their
dealings and inculcate the habit of researching often.
He also advice them to see themselves as global citizens and without
restrictions.
In a panel of analysis, Segun Omojola and Jeffrey Abidoye,the founder
of 'Leadership Without Borders Initiative', a non-governmental
organization expressed his displeasure at the sardonic state of
leadership in the country.
In his assessment of the country in the last 53 years, the Yabatech
Business Administration graduate emphasized that Nigeria was actually
ready to follow the path of development at independence but so many
factors constituted themselves as cogs in the wheel of progress
'Nigeria was able to step on the path of development in the first
republic but the military took us some steps forward and so many steps
backward.In all,we may not have made giant steps, but Nigeria is
making steady progress although she can do better'
One of the participants, Joel Ogunsola,a student of FUTAexpressed
delight at having attended such program.
'I think this is what the Nigerian youths need in order to motivate
them into action for a better society, I'm glad to have participated'
