The Students of Akure origin from different tertiary institutions in
Nigeria took to the street last week Monday to express their
displeasure over non-payment of their book allowances by the Authority
of Akure South Local Government under the caretakership of Mr. Michael
Adeleke.
The Protest led by the President of National Association of Akure
Students Comrade and other executive members took them round the town
and ended their protest at the Governor's Office as they chanted
solidarity songs.
Their protest that started about 10 am in the morning stalled the
free flow of vehicles as many people that were rushing to catch up
with their engagements stocked in the holdup caused by the protest of
the students that were agitating for their benefits.
The peaceful protest was well monitored by the Police and men of State
Security Services (SSS) to ensure that hoodlums did not hijack the
peaceful protest to foment trouble in the State.
While speaking the National Public Relations Officer Students Comrade
Fakayejo Lekan Michael said "We are protesting today because we have
not been paid our book allowance for three years which was supposed to
be paid by the Local Government.
"Each time we approach the Local Government Chairman they will tell us
that they are Caretaker and that it's not in their capacity to pay us
and that is the reason we are moving in our large numbers today to ask
Mr. Governor whether it is true or it is not. Because all Ondo State
Students are tired of this kind of neglect" he said.
In the same way, they noted that they would not relent until their
demands are met saying that their non-payment was sequel to the
attitude of the leaders towards the education of the youths who would
take over the leadership of the Country from the present leaders.
The students added that Government at all levels should rather invest
on education instead of paying lips service to the commitment of
education.
