Olubadan dismisses death rumour

There was anxiety in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday over the health status of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Samuel Odulana, with many spreading the rumour of his death.

The social media was awashed with the rumour. However, later in the day, the monarch spoke with our correspondent, putting an end to the rumour.

A week ago, a similar rumour made the rounds that the king, who celebrated his 100th birthday on April 14, had joined his ancestors. A family statement later indicated that it was not true.

At the time, he had gone to the University College Hospital, Ibadan for a minor surgery and returned to his palace after a few days.

On Wednesday night, the first child of the monarch, Professor Femi Lana, told our correspondent that his father was responding well to treatment. But when he was called again on Thursday as the rumour heightened, he said he was with the Olubadan in the palace and that the king would like to respond personally.

"I know you are calling to confirm the rumour. I am with my father now and I will want you to speak with him," said Prof. Lana.

When given the telephone, Oba Odulana prayed for our correspondent and told him that he was feeling better.

"God will be with you and show concern in your life. He will bless you and your family. I continue to pray for the Ibadan people and Nigeria. I am alright," said the king.
