15 burnt to death in Magongo-Okene road crash

The Kogi State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr Godwin Omiko on Thursday said that no fewer than 15 student were burnt beyond recognition following ghastly auto crashes on Wednesday.

He said the accident occurred at about 10.15pm along Magongo-Okene road in Kogi State.

Speaking with journalists in Lokoja, he said the dead included eight men and six women, while survivors included three people.

A female child, who was initially rescued alive, later died in the hospital according to the FRSC official.

He said the accident occurred at a spot close to the border area between Kogi and Edo states.

He added that the accident involved a Toyota bus with number plate Kogi LG 25 DAH which rammed onto an oncoming Toyota Hiace passenger bus with number plate Lagos AAA 463 XD.

According to him the Toyota bus later hit another vehicle in its front.

The Sector Commander said due to the devastating impact of the crashes, the passenger bus immediately caught fire, and burnt 14 of the passengers beyond recognition.

Omiko said the victims were mostly public health officers of the Local Government Service Commission, Kaduna State.

He stated that the victims were 400-level students travelling to Cotonou, Republic of Benin, to write their first semester examination at Houdegbe North American University.

Omiko said that a female child on the trip with her mother also died in the accident.

According to him, 12 of the dead victims had been given mass burial at the public cemetery at Magongo in the presence of policemen from Ogori police division.

He added that the remains of the female child and that of two other male adults were still in the morgue of the General Hospital, at Obangede.

Omiko said the driver of of the Toyota Hiace bus with number plate Kogi LG 25 DAH believed to be responsible for the crash, Idris Abdulahi, had been arrested by the police.

He added that preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was heavily drunk and drove recklessly leading to the accident.

Omiko appealed to people to avoid travelling at night.

According to him, apart from poor visibility, rescue operations could be hampered at night.
