Students of Ondo State University of Science and Technology, OSUSTECH, Okitipupa have been directed by the management of the institution to embark on a two-week semester break after the students protested the death of one of their colleagues.
The students on Monday protested the death of one of them who was knocked down by a vehicle while trying to cross the road in front of the school on Friday.
The deceased student who was identified as Olabisi Rotimi, a 500 level Student of Ekiti State University had come to visit his friend who is a student of OSUSTECH.
The protesting students blocked the Okitipupa Igbokoda road, disrupting vehicular activities for hours.
The students who gathered in their numbers vowed to continue with the protest until something is done to curb the incessant death along the highway, which they described as "too many in recent times".
They therefore called on relevant authorities to construct speed breakers in front of the school gate to prevent further reoccurrence.
They also demanded among other things police post, improved transport system and accommodation facilities.
Some of the protesting students who spoke with SUNSHINE HERALD described the incident as devastating and unacceptable.
OSUSTECH Registrar, Mr Philip Akinlusi described the protest embarked upon by the students as mischievous.
He however sympathised with the students over the death, saying the University is trying its best to avert a repeat.
Akinlusi added that the students have to go home for two weeks starting from yesterday to allow the completion of the speed breakers .
SUNSHINE HERALD could not reach the Public Relations Officer, PRO of the institution's SUG, as his number was switched off.
He also was yet to reply the message our reporter sent to him as at the time of filing this report.
