Ondo State Government has released a Registration Schedule for motorcycles and tricycles being used for commercial and private purposes in the state.
The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Ondo State Governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Oladoyin Odebowale made the disclosure, while addressing Government House reporters in Akure yesterday.
He said the development was a deliberate plan of government to strengthen security of lives and property and curtailing the activities of some hoodlums who usually perpetrate crimes with the use of motorcycles and tricycles across the state.
He pointed out that the exercise which will cover the entire state within three months, will begin in Irele Local Government Area on Monday, 11th December and will end on 20th February, 2018 in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of the state.
Odebowale stated that the exercise will entail capturing of data and issuance of identity card with a unique code for each operator, but would not be done by proxy.
He further stated that the registration would also capture pictures and fingerprints of the operators at N3,000 for tricyclists and N1,000 per motorcyclist, adding that those that registered their motorcycles during the past administration would have to pay N500 only for upgrading their cards
Odebowale hinted that the card which was formerly known as 'Kaadi Igbeayo' during the immediate past Dr Olusegun Mimiko-led administration, will henceforth be called 'Ondo State Residency Card'.
On why the exercise is scheduled to begin in Irele, he explained that findings have shown that almost 96per cent of motorcycle operators in the area are unregistered.
"We have discovered that most of those who operate in that area are not known to us and we cannot continue to permit faceless individuals to operate in the state.
"Some persons come in from neighboring states at will and escape out of the state having perpetrated their nefarious deals here. We will no longer tolerate this. They all have to register for proper and easy identification.
"We must also, ensure that unregistered motorcycles or tricycles are not allowed to convey our children to and from schools", he said.
Odebowale who added that the exercise goes beyond knowing the number of motorcycles and tricycles that operate in the state for revenue generation, enjoined everyone to get involved in the issue of state security, so that everyone can sleep with their two eyes closed.
He said once the exercise is concluded in a certain area and the officials move to another location, any operator who missed it can proceed to the local government area where officials with card readers will get such a person registered.
"Henceforth, we will not allow anybody who is not captured to operate in Ondo State until such person completes his registration. We will keep them off our roads and whosoever flouts the order would be adequately sanctioned."
To ascertain that every operator is captured, he said temporary card will be issued, while the permanent card would be given to them, upon the verification of the addresses of all registered motorcyclists and tricyclists.
Odebowale further stated that the exercise upon completion, would enable security agencies have a direct access to data, which would assist them to easily track any operator that commits a crime.
He added that whosoever failed to register within the period earmarked for the exercise, would have his motorcycle or tricycle impounded.
