In a bid to forestall any unforeseen incident in flood-prone areas, Ondo state government has launched intensive channelisation of rivers and excavation of drains Speaking in Owo, during a channelisation exercise, at River
Ijala, Ijebu quarters in Owo, Director of Ecology in the state Ministry of
Environment, Mr Kinga Olumide stressed the need for residents to desist from
dumping refuse in streams, rivers and similar water bodies.
He said residents
must stop emptying refuse in rivers and drainages as such habit contributes
to blockage of water courses.
He said man must respect the environment emphasizing
the task of ensuring a safe environment is a collective one
Olumide assured
that the channelisation and excavation exercise would be a continuous one which
would be extended to other parts of the state.
Some residents while lamenting their
ordeal during previous rainy seasons commended the state government for the prompt
preventive intervention.
Two of the residents, Mr Fatai Gbadamosi and Mrs Ronke
Olatugbe however called for provision of waste bins and refuse disposal vehicles
even as they advocated speedy completion of ongoing exercise.
