Governor Akeredolu promises cancer care centre in Ondo

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has promised to establish a Cancer Care Center that will screen and treat cancer in the state.


Speaking during an advocacy visit to the Governor in Akure by leaders  of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN; Arakunrin Akeredolu said the establishment of the centre would help in early detection of the killer disease.


Governor Akeredolu who said early detection of cancer is the first step to stop its advancement before curative measures, assured that the centre would be a priority project for the State Government.


The governor described, BRECAN, as a credible advocacy foundation that must be supported by every citizen to combat the rampage pandemic of cancer. "This foundation is well laid, we can all build on it," Governor Akeredolu said.


Earlier, the President of the Foundation, Mrs Juliet Ogbuogu had sought the collaboration of the Ondo State Government and all stakeholders at ensuring that the prevalence of cancer cases among the productive population are curtailed.


The BRECAN President called for intense lobby of the legislature for the passage of appropriate legislation to ensure adequate funding of all cancer related programmes ranging from awareness, screening and treatment.


In her remarks the Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu who founded BRECAN in 1997 as a non-profit and non-governmental organization, appealed to the State Government to look inwards with a view to dealing with the issue of breast cancer.


Mrs Akeredolu who said a proactive step at arresting cancer is through the establishment of a functional treatment center in Ondo State, passionately pleaded for the support of all citizens to reduce the incidences of cancer in the society.


Activities of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN, are centered on galvanizing actions against cancer in Nigeria.
