Wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called on state governments to ensure and fast track the establishment of  functional and affordable cancer diagnostic centres in their respective states, in order to ensure early detection of the disease and mitigate its spread among Nigerian women.

She stated this in her presentation at the just concluded Southern Governors' Wives Forum held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where she admonished the First Ladies to push for the development of cancer health facilities in their various states, so as to tackle the growing issue of cancer in Nigeria.

During her presentation at the Forum, she said the people, particularly at the grassroots must be better enlightened about the disease, so that women all over Nigeria can know that early detection saves lives.

"Cancer progresses with time and in stages, it starts with a painless lump. If you don't take it to doctors early, it is a ticking time bomb.

"There is need for funds to fight cancer. States must get money for cancer control. It behooves on women, especially, the Non-Governmental Organisations to lobby the states assemblies.

"State governments should begin to plan for cancer control. In doing this, they are taking care of the health of the people", she said.

She further appealed to corporate institutions to prioritise the health of the people in their work places, stressing that primary health care must be given attention in order to safeguard the lives of the people.

Wives of Governors, who attended the forum are, Mrs Nneoma Okorocha (Imo), Mrs. Olufunso Amosun (Ogun), Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola (Osun), Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu (Abia), Mrs. Bolanle Ambode (Lagos), Dr. Linda Ayade (Cross River), Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) and Mrs. Osodiene Ebele Obiano (Anambra).

Others are Mrs. Dame Edith Okowa (Delta), Mrs. Rachael Umahi (Ebonyi), Mrs. Florence Ajimobi (Osun), Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Mrs. Feyisetan Fayose (Ekiti).

"I see it as a brilliant idea. As you will recall, different topics were addressed. Some spoke on health matters, how you will start your different stages of business, and the methods of care for the girl child to enable them have a better future."

Mrs Gilda Amatah, Special Assistant to the wife of Governor Akeredolu on Domestic Affairs expressed that most things in the print should be done in the practical. She noted that the ideas are perfect, but it would be better when put in practice. She further said that practicalisation of great ideas would move the affairs of the states forward.

I like the whole idea, it is a good thing to exchange ideas to make Nigeria a better place to live in. But, it is better to put it into action, I would like to go to the various states to see these things in place there."

Mrs Temitope Daniyan, Special Assistant to Mrs Akeredolu on Gender Flex and Documentation described the forum as a welcome idea and should be done at all times. She further advised that the topics that were presented by the various Excellencies should be properly looked into.

I can see that when there is love, it has overcome everything you can think about. With this forum, I have been convinced to start snail farming as soon as I get back. We could see that we have intellectuals quite alright, but we could see that everyone has a take home of something."
