The commissioner for Health in Ondo State, Dr Dayo Adeyanju has said that the state government in the last eight years has invested so much on the maternal and child health programme.
The commissioner made this known at the official commissioning of the 20-beded en-suite ultra modern hostel and cafeteria at the Ondo state school of midwifery, Akure.
Dr Adeyanju said: "You will agree with me that since the inception of this administration, the state government has invested so much that maternal and infant mortality is achieved."
While noting that the midwives are very important stakeholders as they provide middle level skilled birth manpower, he said they are needed to actualize the government vision of zero maternal and infant mortality.
He said the building was built in order to satisfy the accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria despite the current economic realities.
Adeyanju then charged the staff and students of the institution to be dedicated and committed in order to make the institution a foremost world class training facility.
While speaking at the event, the Principal of the school, Mrs Olamitan Oladele said the vision of the establishment of basic school of midwifery in the nation was to produce trained midwives who are competent and available to provide services at all tiers of health delivery.
She was full of praise to the state government for the project, saying the newly commissioned hostels would be a great relief considering the dearth of hostels in the school.
Mrs Oladele said the school has adopted the World Health Organization (WHO) concept of reducing maternal and infant mortality and mobility, integrating health care into the community using family unit health care approach.
The student union President of the school, Ogunyinka Olamide expressed her appreciation to the state government, saying the students would make adequate use of the facilities.
She said the students would have a fresh atmosphere to read and focus on their studies in the new hostel building.
Also a set of classrooms and cafeteria were commissioned by the commissioner at the Ondo state state school of health technology.
Dignitaries at the even included, the Director of Nursing Services at the ministry, Mrs Alice Ogundele, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Taye Oni and other principal officers of the schools.
