Following the official announcement of the results of Saturday's governorship election in Ekiti State, the Peoples Democratic Party, whose candidate, Ayodele Fayose, was declared winner, has been described as the party to beat.
This is according to Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu.
In a press statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Israel A. Ebije, Gov. Aliyu, while Fayose on his electoral victory over the incumbent, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressive Peoples Party, APC, said the victory was well deserved.
He said, "The election was free and fair, and it mirrors the true desire of the people to welcome back PDP rule in Ekiti. The Ekiti example should also serve as an agenda of what the opposition will face in the next general election".
While calling on contestants in the election to join hands and work with the governor-elect, the Niger State governor said the most important factor is to ensure that the interest of the state was paramount over individual ambition.
He said, "Let me congratulate Ayo Fayose for his well-deserved victory. From what observers said about the election, it was indeed free and fair".
Aliyu also congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission and security operatives, who he said worked assiduously in making the entire election a success. He urged them to continue in that direction as it will make elections in Nigeria a true reflection of the wish of the people.
