The Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, on Thursday, said his administration would soon conduct local government election to entrench democracy at the third tier of government.

Apart from this, he also expressed the commitment of the present administration in the state to the welfare of workers with a pledge to continue to formulate policies that would lead to their growth.

Addressing workers at the annual Workers' Day celebration in Akure, the governor said the election could not be held because of the suit instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on its conduct.

He, however, said the suit was before the Supreme Court, saying that immediately the case was decided at the apex court, election would be organised to give room for elective officials at the grass roots.

Speaking on the efforts at restructuring the local government administration in the state, Mimiko said, "this address will not be complete without mentioning our courage to restructure local government administration in the state; we have re-engineered the local government administration to make it more productive and effective.

"On the non-conduct of local government election in Ondo State, this is due to the court case instituted by the PDP, the case is now at the Supreme Court ,as soon as judgment is given, we shall conduct election into the various offices in the local government councils."

On the recently passed contributory pension scheme, Mimiko explained that the scheme was introduced in the interest of the workforce of the state.

According to him, the scheme would guarantee the payment of retirement benefits to the workers at the appropriate time.

He said "let me assure you that the decision of the state government to fully implement the Contributory Pension Scheme ,as witnessed by the signing into Law on March 25, 2014, the Bill passed by the House of Assembly, was borne out of the desire for our workers to get their retirement benefits as and when due."

"It must be said that all over the world, pension schemes have experienced a lot of troubles due to the mismanagement, unfavourable demographic trends and fiscal indiscipline among governments.

The Non-contributory Pension Scheme under the Pension Act 102 of 1979, has virtually collapsed at various levels of government in Nigeria.

"Notwithstanding the performance of Ondo State so far under the Non-Contributory Pension Scheme, the state has a statutory duty to embrace the Contributory Pension Scheme under the Pension Scheme Act2004. I want to assure workers that the state government shall keep faith with its responsibilities under the scheme."
