The 2014 Workers' Day was celebrated in Akure, the Ondo State capital, with the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, imploring workers in the state to sustain their loyalty and double their supports for his administration.

The celebration, which held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, witnessed a march past by the various industrial unions in the state. Members of the state National Union of Local Government Employees also stepped out to appreciate the governor for the pardon granted 4,000 members of the union who were affected in the last local government restructuring exercise.

Mimiko noted that with the cooperation of the workers, the vision of his administration to lift the state to an enviable position would be achieved.

He  explained  that the decision of his  government to fully implement the Contributory Pension Scheme was borne out of the desire for the  workers to get their retirement benefits as and when due.

He assured the workers that the state government would keep faith with its responsibilities under the scheme

"It must be said that all over the world, pension schemes have experienced a lot of troubles due to the mismanagement, unfavourable demographic trends and fiscal indiscipline among governments," he governor noted.

He however said the government would remain committed to workers' welfare, adding that his administration had made a deliberate investment in the development of human capital as the greatest contributors to the Gross Domestic Product of the country.

He assured that the local government election would be conducted in the state as soon as judgement is delivered at the Supreme Court.

In their speeches, the state chairman of the NLC, Bosede Daramola; and her TUC counterpart,  Sola Ekundayo lauded the government for its programmes since inception, promising further support and cooperation to enable it to achieve more for the entire people of the state.
