The Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has assured the people of the state that his administration will never renege in its promise to take the maternal and child health care delivery to the greater height across the Eighteen Local Government of the state.

The Governor gave this assurance at the flag-off ceremony for May 2014 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week, held at the premises of the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

According to him, the previous rounds of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health week in Ondo State, had reduced the number of unimmunized children effectively, and allowed for distribution of vitamin A supplement to children between ages 6 to 59 months and de-worming tablets to 12 to 59 months.

He said that the May flagging off of the immunization week is another opportunity to re-affirm his administration's commitment to continuously sensitize the general public on Maternal and Child Survival programmes in the state.

The intervention that will be implemented during the May, 2014 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week round according to the Governor, includes routine immunization, Vitamin A supplement, de-worming, screening for malnutrition, antenatal care, birth registration and health education on key household practices such as breast feeding, hand-washing and a host of others.

He directed all the Local Government Care-Taker Chairmen in the state to provide logistics and financial support for the successful implementation of this round Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week exercise in their respective Local Government Areas.

Governor Mimiko commended all development partners, especially World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, NPHCDA and other agencies for their support for the successful implementation of previous rounds of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health week in Ondo State.

In his opening address at the occasion, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju explained that the exercise was aimed at reaching all the children under the age of 5 years with necessary healthcare services, urging all parents and care-givers to take their children and wards to the public health facilities and designated service points close to them.

Also speaking, the development partners through the representative of UNICEF, Ayo Ade, said they are  delighted to be partners in progress in tackling all childhood killer diseases, adding that Ondo state is on track in eradicating polio in the state.
