Nigeria has overtaken South Africa to become Facebook's largest user base in Sub Saharan Africa with over 11 million users. For many years, the number of Nigerians on the social networking site significantly lagged behind the number of South Africans on the site. However, this trend has rapidly reversed in recent times with the number of Nigerians on Facebook exceeding the number of South Africans on Facebook by over 2 million people.

With about 9.4 million users, South Africa is the second most populous country for Facebook in Sub Saharan Africa. Egypt is the most populous Facebook country in Africa as a whole with over 16.8 million users.

Facebook has for a long time been a popular destination for Nigerians online with many Nigerians setting up their first Internet accounts on the platform. At present, over 66% of Nigerians on Facebook are male. The most popular age bracket of Nigerians on Facebook are Nigerians under the age of 25 with over 5.6 million Nigerians in this demographic. The most popular brands in the country are Guaranty Trust Bank, MTN and Airtel while the most popular public figures are Pastor E.A. Adeboye, Nollywood Actress, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
