For the past years, the institution has witnessed the award of certificates and prizes to students who have really distinguished themselves in academic performance. The institution witnessed the graduation ceremony of students who have proved to be developed academically in their various fields of specialization like their predecessors.
They are not to flood the labour markets but are capable of providing employment for themselves and create opportunity for others. It is the professional nature of their courses that provide them with this unique opportunity.
In Federal University of Technology, Minna freedom of enterprise and dedication to the proposition that individual success and moral responsibility can and must go together is their belief, So many people believes that the contribution of the great citadel of learning has made to good citizenship has been out of proportion to its size.
Also at FUT Minna emphasis is made on the need for extra hard work.
Thirty-four students of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, on Saturday pass out with first class degrees out of the 2,506 students for 2009/2010 academic session.
At the 19th and 20th convocation ceremonies of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Muhammed Salihu Audu which conducted the ceremonies as his last as the Vice-Chancellor as his tenure ends later in the year said another set of 179 spill-over students of 2010/2011 would also be graduating, bringing the number of first degree graduating students to 2,685.
Most of the graduants who are current Batch B and C set of National Youth Service Corp had to leave their National Youth Service Corp Primary place of assignment to attend the occasion with their loved ones and well wishers, for some it was avenue to see some of their lecturers, long time friends, class mate after a long while and keep them updated about their individual achievements since they left school and about their NYSC experience.
The grand ceremony also saw the award of higher degrees like 38 doctorates degree certificate, 288 master’s degree certificate, 248 postgraduate diploma degree certificate
A breakdown of the statistics showed that School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) produced 18 first class graduates, while nine graduating students of the School of Science and Science Education (SSSE) made the elite class.
The School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) had four first class graduates, while the School of Environmental Technology (SET) and School of Entrepreneurship and Management Technology (SEMT) had two and one first class degree holders.
Further details showed that 514 students graduated with second upper division, 1,221 made second class lower division, while 668 bagged third class and 69 with pass degrees.
The main event which took place at the convocation square, Apart from the Honourees, other dignitaries were the host governor, chief servant and the executive governor Niger State, Dr. Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu (OON,CON) with his wife, His Royal Highness, the Estu Nupe, Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar,CFR, Emir of Minna, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Faruq Bahago, CON, Commissioners in the state cabinet among others.
Other highlights for the convocation include the inauguration of projects at the Gidan Kwano campus of the institution and another at the administrative block for the newly established School of Information and Communications Technology by the visitor to the university and president of Nigeria Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The central classrooms block and the 7.5mVA power sub-station which was commissioned by the chief servant and the executive governor Niger State, Dr. Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu (OON,CON)
The students ultra-modern community market commissioned by the school chancellor, His Royal Majesty, Godwin Toritseju Ayonmi-Gbesimi Emiko, CFR Ogiame Atuwase II, and the Olu of warri.
Prof. Julius Okojie the Exective Secetary of the National Universities Commssion (NUC) commissioned the School of Environmental Technology phase II
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan admitted that the educational sector in the country has suffered a long time structural deficiency, just as he vowed not to further tolerate the inefficiencies that characterized the sector and caused its systemic failure.
He reiterated that the development needed as a nation cannot be accomplished without a sound and robust educational sector.
The President who stated this yesterday at the 20th Convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna said the nation has high expectations of the tertiary institutions in the country as the only way to lift up the nation is by educating people.
“Our nation today finds itself being distracted from its match towards greatness by ideologues motivated by sundry primordial instincts. We can only fight them by beaming a thousand points of light at the bastions of darkness and fear and we need our educationists to make this possible.
“We have high expectations of our tertiary institutions and I personally will not tolerate the inefficiencies which are causing our educational system to fail our children. We are presently affecting a silent revolution in the delivery of knowledge to our students and this is because of the realization that the educational sector has, for long, been faced with structural deficiencies”, Jonathan said.
The President who was represented by the Minister for Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i urged the youths in the nation to be resilient and determined even in the face of daunting challenges giving the assurance that their preservance will not be in vain as the his administration is putting all in place in ensuring that Nigeria is better than they met it.
He called for the establishment of entrepreneurship training courses in the universities with a view to equipping the students with skills necessary to make the job creators rather than job seekers when they graduate while imploring the students to make use of creative ways to challenge whatever challenges they may face.
Jonathan further said that university administrators should ensure that peace and stability are paramount in the system while calling for their support for government policies in order to move the nation forward.
Earlier the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Muhammed Audu said out of the 2506 first degree students that graduated 34 bagged first class honours, 514 had second class upper and 1,221 made second class lower while 668 came out with third class honours.
He also said that the university awarded 248 postgraduate diploma certificates, 288 masters’ certificates and 38 doctorate degree certificates. Three eminent personalities; Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekeweremadu CFR , an industrialist, Alhaji Sani Dauda, MON Chairman ASD Motors and Mr. Victor Winn Chairman/Managing Director, Osprey international limited were also conferred with honorary doctorate degrees (Honoris Causa).
Receiving the Doctor of Technology, Alhaji Sani Dauda, MON, the chairman of ASD Motors made a pledge of providing an equipped mobile workshop for the institution which worth #70million.
The event which preceded the convocation ceremony was the convocation lecture which took place at the first Bank Agric lecture hall, main campus, Gidan Kwano. The lectuerer was Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, NUC, Abuja and Chairman, Governing Council of Osun State University. As expected and in accordance with his huge wealth of experience he did justice to the lecture titled “Breaking Barriers to National development: Are we taking full Advantage of Science and Technology?”
One of the graduating students, Eromosele Oria-Usifo electrical and electronic engineering expressed gratitude to God, “I am very glad that I’m cleared officially” he advised students to be always patient and learn to endure no matter what come their way.
Emmanuel Odumosu graduated from Mathematics and computer science. He said the university would have lasting influence in his life. Owing to the fact that he utilizes the saying “pass through the school and allow the school to pass through you”
He was into many organizations on campus which at a point he lead them, some were National Association of computer Science Students. He advised the management to enhance the students in building up their leadership skills while in school which will help them later in future.
Ruth Adeyemo who graduated with a first class in Biochemistry said: “Not only will I go into the labour market to make a difference; I will leave my footprints by creating a path which will last the test of time.”
