Acute water scarcity has hit the Bosso campus of Federal University of Technology, Minna. The scarcity, which started a week ago and continued up to the time of filing this report, has forced students to move from one hostel to another looking for water to drink, cook and bath with.
It was a hard time for students as they walked long distances looking for water from different well and bore-hole located around the campus. Sanitation as been on the lowest level as some toilets and bathrooms were littered with excrement.
The girls were worst hit as some of them who were “at that time of the month” had to contend with the water shortage. Many students of the most beautiful campus in Nigeria are currently destabilized, as they fall on the extreme alternative of going to nearby wells to get water for their domestic uses. Some other students who could not make do with stream water resort to buying water to make themselves comfortable; some others leave their beds in the dead of night to queue for water in some of the halls of residence where water run within the school.
Some students have missed attendance, quiz and classes as a result of this; student who spoke to the correspondent, expressed displeasure over the situation.
James Audu, a 300 level student said the condition was appalling. “For the past few days now, we have been suffering seriously due to inadequate water supply”, he said. He lamented that it has forced students with average financial capacity to spend their lean resources at the expense of buying water from truck pushers known as “Mai Ruwa” at the rate of #80 per keg which ought to be #20 on a normal day and buying of sachet water to either cook, bath or something. Sometimes you discover that students just do the “rub and shine” strategy to make things up and go for lectures. He revealed further.
Also Danladi Jibrin said it was disheartening that students were passing through such an embarrassing predicament.
Students queuing desperately to get water in the great citadel of learning, taking cognizance of the weather is too disheartening. In fact, two students fought due to this ugly situation early hours of Thursday morning at the female hostel this depicts the failure of the system and it goes a long way, in that it affects students performance academically said a 300 level biochemistry student in anonymous.
She appealed to the management especially the Dean of students’ Affairs to intervene because the female students were fully affected. Although the water tankers supply water to the hostels, the situation persists due the population of students in the hostel. This means that we waste many hours just scouting for water, which prevents us from attending most of our first lectures, from cooking and washing our clothes.
Another student of Biological Science Taiwo Adeola had this to say “It is paradoxical to see FUT MINNA students in ‘chain’ queue for water when the school has a water factory plant which is used to produce the school ‘pure water’ which we still buy after we had paid school fee, so why then do we pay hostel fee, this problem has made many student not to take their breakfast she stated.
She called on the Vice-Chancellor to find a lasting solution to the problem.
Popoola Yinka of physic department said the situation in Bosso Campus is harsh, due to the water scarcity you find students struggling to get water as early as 5am; some even quarrel as a result while others go for their lectures late.
“We are experiencing a transition from better to worse in welfare conditions, if we compare this session to the previous. Though it wasn’t 100 percent okay last year, it was better. There was never a week without water. To my surprise, this year water scarcity seems the order of the day. Management should understand that water is essential for human existence.” so submitted by Ngozi John of electrical engineering 100 level.
Mean while as at the filing of this report attempt to get through to the SUG president proved impossible but the financial secretary was in touched with and appealed for calm as according to him, the situation is being looked into by the school authority.
Also in a chat with the SUG PRO he made known that the pipe supplying the school from the state water board got damaged and everything are to be in place before students resume back from the election break.
Our students should please be patient; the problem will soon be over he said.
