Ondo state government is targeting the vaccination of about 350,000 children between 0 to 9 months in commemoration of the African Vaccination Week 2018.

Addressing journalists in Akure, Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Wahab Adegbenro said the commemorative activity will hold in Akoko south west local government.

"In line with the directive of the federal government in commemoration of the week, a road show/walk is to hold in Oka-Akoko, Akoko south west LGA this morning in support of the week and to further create awareness for vaccination in that LGA and its environs," he said.

According to the commisoner, Akoko south west local government was picked for the exercise because of its "sub-optimal performance" in January and February 2018 routine immunization exercise.

Adegbenro also used the occasion to speak on the routine immunization exercise being carried out across the state by the state government.

According to him, the state offers free vaccination across the 583 primary health facilities in the state.

"The Ondo state government, led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, believes in the sanctity of routine immunization in the collective drive to keep vaccine-preventable diseases at bay in Ondo state and therefore continues to support the federal government's initiative in this regard," Adegbenro said.

He also said that the state recorded 108% success in the just concluded measles vaccination with 735,168 children vaccinated from a target of 700,000 children.

The African Vaccination Week has as its theme "Vaccines work, be an immunization champion".

The special immunization outreach services will run from tomorrow, April 24 to Thursday, April 26, 2018.
