The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, has lauded the re- introduction of Post – UTME by the Federal Government and restated commitment to merit driven admission policy.
Ajibefun stated this at the weekend while fielding questions at the end of an inspection exercise, held at the University's e-learning centre.
He disclosed that no fewer than 18,370 candidates are taking part in the test.
In his words, "The restoration of the Post -UTME is a very good development. I had said it in the past that the cancellation of the screening test would negatively affect the admission process as well as reduce the integrity and quality of entrants into Nigerian universities."
Ajibefun, who noted that the conduct of this year's (academic session) screening exercise in AAUA was a great improvement upon previous years, stressed the continued commitment of the university to merit-driven admission policy.
He stated that, "This year's screening exercise is a great improvement upon the previous years. I'm highly impressed with the way it is organised this year. We have over 18,000 candidates taking the test here, and we take them 500 at a time. But the entire exercise is so smooth that you won't even notice rowdiness as things are so well arranged.
"The students are taking the test in a very good environment that is very conducive. And the results are always released by the evening of each day, and this does not give room for any manipulation at all."
In his own comment, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, who is also the Chairman of the Committee on Post-UTME, stressed that Ajasin Varsity placed high premium on excellence, noting that the process of achieving academic excellence started with the value the university places on her admission process.
The DVC stated, "AAUA is known for excellence. Achieving excellence is a process that starts with the value an institution puts on its admission process. As a University, we do not only profess excellence, we demonstrate it, and demonstrating excellence involves ensuring that only the best candidates are admitted to the university. That is the reason the university continues to hold on to its merit-driven policy very firmly."
Some of the candidates described the exercise as smooth and good. One of them, Stephen Onwuka, who did his screening on Thursday, and wished to study Computer Science in the Faculty of Science , said, "Everything was well organized and monitored. The screening was really good."
Also speaking, Mesioye Oluwatomisin, said, "The screening was okay. I was able to provide answers to questions in the areas I read. The facilities are very good. I like the university and all my findings and the things I read about the school are great."
In her own submission, another candidate, Ibitoye Ayomide, said: "The test was fine, and very great. The questions are of good standard. I love the Computer Centre and the whole process."
