A marriage counsellor, Mr Nasir Abdulquadri, says about 70 per cent homes in Nigeria are not peaceful due to couple's lack of proper understanding of each other.

Abdulquadri made the assertion on Tuesday at a lecture on marriage organised by Muslim Youths Intellectual Forum in Ilorin.

He said most couples were lured into marriage unprepared for the challenges, urging youths to reposition their mindsets.

Abdulquadri also called on Nigerian leaders to urgently put in place marital counselling institutions to save many homes from collapse.

He advised couples to see marriage as a life journey, and a concept which could make religious institutions stronger.

Abdulquadri also urged couples to be tolerant and be their brother's keeper to ensure peace and stability in their homes, as no human being was perfect.

"You have to let sacrifice and happiness be your watchword at homes and learn to manage your egos," he advised.

Prof. AbdulGafar Jimoh, who spoke as chairman of the occasion, urged parents to ensure proper monitoring of their children.

Jimoh said it was necessary to counsel them before going into the marriage institution to enable them manage their matrimony effectively.

In his remarks, Mr Yusuf Ali (SAN), who shared the testimonies of his marital life, called for patience and perseverance among the couples.

Ali said the programme was organised to reduce incessant matrimonial problems and high rate of divorce in the society.
