Cleric remanded for allegedly raping minor in Ondo

A new generation church cleric in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government area of Ondo State has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly having carnal knowledge of a minor, daughter of his co-tenant.

The minor (name withheld) is currently eight years old, the court was told.

According to the charge, the accused person allegedly committed the offence at about 2.00pm at No 2, Bolorunduro Street, Ore on April 5, 2016.

The court learnt that it was not the first time the man of God would molest the innocent young girl.

The offence, prosecution said is contrary to and punishable under section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The accused person however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecuting, Simon Odoh (ASP) said that the case file was new to him and needed time to study it. He therefore applied for adjournment.

Barr. Adebayo Adegboye is on watching brief for the complainant in the case, while Barr. Chidozie, the counsel to the accused person could not secure the bail of his client.

The Presiding Magistrate S. O. Agunloye referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Akure for legal advice, ordering the accused person to be remanded until the adjournment date fixed for May 4, 2016.
