INEC invalidates certificates of return issued to three Plateau lawmakers

‎The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the certificates of return it earlier issued three Plateau lawmakers who were declared winners of the April election in their constituencies as invalid.
The affected lawmakers reportedly include: Mwansat Istifanus Caleb, PDP, Pankshin South; Mrs Alice Asaije Dimlong, APC, Pankshin North and Vincent Bulus, PDP Langtang South.

INEC, in a letter by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Godwin M. Kwanga, dated December 14, 2015 written to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Peter Azi, and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Jos, said it opted to invalidate the lawmakers' certificates of return in view of the verdict of the Jos Judicial Division of the Court of Appeal which had on December 5 nullified their elections.

The Appeal Court had nullified results of the entire Langtang South and ruled that the decision of the lower tribunal to the effect that the appellant, Vincent Bulus' conviction and sentence for the offence of cheating contrary to section 324 of the penal code disqualified him from contesting the election under 1999 constitution

In the case of Pankshin North and South, the Appeal Court held that a fresh election be conducted in the two constituencies, but only in Nyelleng and Pyabor polling units respectively.

The electoral body, in the letter, noted that "the effect of these judgements is that the certificates of return issued to the members representing these constituencies are no longer valid."
