Why we went on strike – ASUU UNIJOS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Jos, UNIJOS, chapter, has disclosed the reasons for the school's recent strike action.

It will be recalled that on October 23, lecturers of the UNIJOS had gone on an indefinite strike approved by the ASUU National Executive Council, stating that it was a means to remind the Federal Government on their demand for a better working condition.

Dr. Christopher Piwuna, the chapter's chairman, told the press that the university management had repeatedly broken promises made over payments of the staff's entitlements.

Speaking further, Piwuna said trouble started shortly after the six-month ASUU nation-wide strike in June 2013.

According to him, the federal government released money for staff's welfare and needs assessment, but the money was misappropriated by the university.

He said over 300 members of staff were not paid, with the school also reneging on postgraduate entitlements owed some of the staff.

The chairman also complained about the salary gulf between UNIJOS lecturers and lecturers of other Federal Universities.

He said the school's management was also fond of complaining that there was no money.
