Independence: Mimiko pardons 15 prisoners

Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has granted amnesty to fifteen prisoners serving different jail terms in the state to mark the Nation's 54th Independence Anniversary.

 

According to a statement issued by the state's Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, the Governor's gesture is in line with the power conferred on him by section 212 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

 

They were all granted amnesty on the ground of good conduct.

 

According to the statement, the amnesty is exercise of the Governor's power to grant prerogative of mercy to convicts as conferred on him by the Constitution of the country, adding that the Governor is empowered to pardon, free, grant respite or substitute severe punishment with lesser one as form of amnesty for convicts.

 

The amnesty takes immediate effect according to the statement.
