The 62nd Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God began on Monday with the ordination of 8,000 deacons and deaconesses.
The convention, which holds at the Redemption Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has as theme 'Holy Spirit'.
In his opening address, the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, described the Holy Spirit as a divine helper.
He said the convention was meant for those who were thirsty for divine help.
Adeboye said, "The convention is specifically meant for those who are tired of their present state and those who know that things can be a lot better if only help can come in their direction.
"It is for this purpose that I really want to encourage seriousness at this year's convention.
"Make up your mind not to miss the visitation of the Holy Spirit and present yourself at every meeting with payers and expectation.
"Keep the camp holy and clean so as not to grieve the Holy Spirit and observe all rules. You will return home with help and counsel that will make you a new person."
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that there was a heavy presence of men of the Federal Road Safety Commission and other traffic agencies at the venue to control traffic.
NAN also reports that additional car parks were created to ease traffic congestion around the area.
Meanwhile, the cost of transportation from various motor parks in Abeokuta to the convention ground rose by about 80 per cent as a result of the programme.
The fare from the popular Kuto Motor park, Abeokuta, a distance of about 50 km to Redemption Camp, rose from N400 to N700 on Monday.
The week-long programme continues on Tuesday with the ordination of Assistant Pastors as well as seminars and plenary sessions.
