Rivers new council boss locked out of office

THERE was a mild drama in Rivers State on Monday when the newly appointed Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Lawrence Chukwu, was temporarily locked out of his office.

Chukwu, who was recently inaugurated as the new council boss in Obio/Akpor by the State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was shocked to notice that he could not enter his office to assume duty shortly after inaugurating his committee members.

It was learnt that the door leading to the chairman's office was locked by the outgone chairman, Mr. Timothy Nsirim, who had vowed not to leave office until the court ruled otherwise.

Angered by the situation, Chukwu, who directed that the door to his office be forced open, maintained that nobody, including the outgone chairman, would stop him from taking over his office.

The door was immediately forced open by some of the youths that streamed to the Obio/Akpor Council Secretariat to witness the inauguration of the caretaker committee.

It will be recalled that the state governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, had last week dissolved 21 out of the 23 local government councils, leaving out Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni and Degema local government councils, which recently held council elections.

Earlier, while inaugurating the new caretaker committee members, Chukwu announced the dissolution of Obio/Akpor Market and Revenue Committees, adding that the council had been returned to the rightful owners.

"Some people boasted few days ago they would not leave the council secretariat. But today, we are here and have taken over all the offices. By the powers conferred on me,, I hereby announce the dissolution of all market and revenue committees. Today, Obio/Akpor has been returned to the rightful owners," Chukwu said.

In his remark, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, who is one of the political leaders in the area, dismissed the threat by the former council chairman (Nsirim) that the seat of the council chairman in Obio/Akpor was not vacant.
