‘I’m not afraid to debate with Fayemi’

The Labour Party governorship candidate, Opeyemi Bamidele, on Tuesday, said that he was not afraid to face Governor Kayode Fayemi in a debate to discuss governance and development of the state.

In a statement by his media aide, Ahmed Salami, the LP candidate advised Fayemi against engaging in intellectual arrogance.

Bamidele described the impression by Fayemi that his opponents are timid to face him in a debate as baseless and unfounded. He said he is more politically exposed and experienced to be threatened by anybody.

"I can't be intimidated by Fayemi in any form. I think I am vast in terms of education, brilliance, eloquence and general knowledge of the economic situation of the state to confront Governor Fayemi in any debate.

"My participation in the Ekiti governorship contest is not by accident or a spontaneous reaction. I have prepared for it over the years and I have what it takes to govern a highly educated state like Ekiti. So, if any contestant is afraid of debate, count me out.

"I have been commissioner in various ministries in Lagos State. I had partaken in many debates and I am still expecting such to happen before the June 21 election.

Just like Governor Fayemi stated that he is challenging his opponents to a debate, I also state that I am ready to face him in any forum to discuss the issues affecting our people," Bamidele said.

Also reacting to the claim by All Progressives Congress that over 1,000 LP members led by one Ademola had defected into its party, Bamidele described those that decamped as impostors who were not registered members of the LP.

"If the APC is so sure that the so-called defectors were members of the LP it should produce their registration numbers in our register. APC should state their wards and the previous roles they had played in our party. We know that it was a stage-managed defection meant to embarrass us.

"The National Chairman of our party, Dan Nwanyanwu , who has the authority to pronounce or determine the status of a member had declared these people as impostors. I want to believe that the APC was only applying this tactics to create a lazy impression that the battle is not lost yet when it is obvious that Governor Kayode Fayemi's days in office are numbered," he said.
