The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has called on security agencies to give maximum protection to corps members that will be used as adhoc staff in Saturday's Governorship election in Ekiti State.

He also charged politicians to "warn their supporters not to extend any form of violence to corps members."

A statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations in NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, quoted Olawumi as making the demands during a meeting with heads of security agencies in Ekiti State ahead of the governorship polls.

According to him, the NYSC has however taken steps to ensure that corps members are given maximum security.

Olawunmi who was in Ekiti State, a few days to the election, solicited the support of the security agencies to ensure that corps members were protected at every point of election duty.

Aderibigbe said, "At the Police Command Headquarters, Ado-Ekiti, the Commissioner of Police deployed for the election, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, told the NYSC DG that they have concerns for the safety of corps members and are therefore ready to give them maximum protection and withstand any form of upheaval that may arise."

In his response, the CP, according to the statement, re-assured the NYSC DG of the safety of corps members.

Meanwhile, the Army Brigade Commander (Akure/Ekiti battalion), Brig.-Gen. A.A. Momoh, also assured Olawunmi of his support in ensuring the safety of corps members during the election.

Momoh gave the assurance when the NYSC DG also visited him at his camp to solicit for corps members' protection.

He stated that NYSC members are stakeholders in the election exercise adding that corps members should reject any form of inducement from anyone during the exercise
