No fewer than seven athletes and four technical officials of the Ondo State Sports Council (OSSC) will be among Nigeria's representatives at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Games will hold from July 23 to Aug. 3
OSSC Chairman, Mike Adeyeye, made the confirmation while receiving members of the state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Wednesday in Akure. Adeyeye said the athletes and officials were among those already in the national camp ahead of the Games.
According to Adeyeye, the state is committed to the grooming of athletes to national standard in order to represent the country in international competitions. He said the state government was also committed toward making sports a means of livelihood for athletes.
Adeyeye advised parents to allow their children and wards participate in sporting activities "as they had given many youths scholarships and job.'' The chairman also commended sports writers for giving adequate coverage and publicity to the activities of the council.
The State SWAN Chairman, Akintunde Akinsemola, had earlier commended the state government over the re-appointment of Adeyeye. Adeyeye has been in office since the administration of the late Gov. Olusegun Agagu.
Akinsemola noted that it was during Adeyeye's tenure that the state won gold medals in some national sporting events such as scrabble and karate.
The chairman, however, solicited the assistance of the chairman in acquiring a well-equipped office for the association within the premises of the council.
