Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; director of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN PLC), Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, were part of the dignitaries who took a stand on eradicating poverty in Nigeria at the presentation of a book entitled: "Rich Country, Poor People" in Lagos on Thursday.
Mimiko called for the closing of the gap between the citizens and their government, saying that the route to rapid development and engendering of equality was the empowerment of women.
He also added that the more empowered a woman is, the more chances for the children's survival.
"In Ondo State, we had no doubt in our minds that we must tackle inequality, but within the limitations, we identified education as key factor. Thank God for the vision of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
"However, education is no longer a tool for development because public schools are out of reach of many. How do our people access quality education unless the government subsidises tertiary education? This is why in Ondo State, tuition fee is N25,000. In spite of this, many cannot afford it."
Chairman of the occasion, Ambassador Awolowo-Dosumu, describing the book as a very robust diagnostic, said, "we should begin to build trust between the leaders and the citizens.
While recalling that Chief Awolowo's main interest while in government was the progress of the people, Awolowo-Dosumu said that the sage's life was devoted to making the life of the people better, which is the essence of governance.
