During a visit to motor-parks in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, the drivers urged the governor to discountenance the claim by opposition candidates that they were supporting them, stressing that "drivers are not ready to go back to the days of disunity."
According to the RTEAN chairman, Mr. Adebayo Adeyeye (also known as Oju-Igo), members of his union were not allowed to ply Akure route during the PDP administration.
"I was one of those who fought to change that and because of that, the PDP administration declared me wanted. When the APC government led by Dr. Fayemi came on board, that changed. He settled the rift and told members of the two unions in plain terms that we could only make meaningful progress when there is peace. RTEAN members now ply all routes and there has not been crisis between the two unions since Fayemi became governor," Adeyeye said.
The RTEAN chairman also commended the governor for the construction of roads.
"There was a time we would take our vehicles for repairs at least once in a week. We no longer spend our profit on repairs because the Fayemi administration has fixed all roads leading into Ekiti State. Both inter and intra-city roads have also been put in shape.
"We have neither gold nor silver to give the governor. The only thing we have is our votes. Our members are registered voters and have obtained their permanent voter's card. Those in the opposition lying about drivers' support will be shocked on June 21 when we re-elect Dr. Kayode Fayemi," he stated emphatically.
The General Manager, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Akure/Ilawe/Benin/Port-Harcourt Chapter, Mr. Toyin Jimoh, said drivers were impressed with the good works of the governor and have decided to re-elect him.
"The governor should continue with his good works and not pay attention to jesters claiming that drivers are supporting them. By June 22 when Dr. Fayemi will be declared re-elected, they would wake up from their daydream," said Jimoh.
He said the governor has distinguished himself as a man of honour by keeping to his promises.
"He has promised to help put our motor-park in good condition. We know he will fulfill the promise because he has never promised without fulfilling it," he added.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the Kayode Fayemi Camapaign Organisation, Bimbo Daramola, said as stakeholders, it was imperative to solicit the cooperation of drivers in the struggle to ensure that "Ekiti does not go back to the days of one week, one trouble."
Daramola said "as stakeholders, we will bear the brunt most, if Ekiti does not continue to move forward as we have been doing in the last three and a half years. Those outsiders beating the drums of war in collaboration with fifth columnists will not be here."
The campaign train had earlier held a meeting with members of Ekiti State Youth Traders Development Association at the Erekesan market in Ado-Ekiti.
The Director-General of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation told them that trading was only possible in an atmosphere of peace which the Fayemi administration has engendered since it came on board.
He said Ekiti people must not allow anyone to take them for a ride again.
"Can you compare someone who buys roasted plantain from an old woman and then doles out N1, 000 to her. That woman may never see him or profit from him again. Compare that to Governor Fayemi who gives 25, 000 of such elderly persons N5, 000 every month. This is the difference between Dr. Fayemi and them. While Fayemi is touching lives meaningfully, they are busy with meaningless jamboree."
The young traders said the days of violent politicking were over in Ekiti State and that none of their members was ready to vote for a party that thrives on harassment, dehumanization and bastardization of the psyche of Nigerians.
Apart from the three unions visited, the campaign train of the governor also made stopovers at different junctions in the state capital including Old-Garage, Mugbagba, Ijigbo, Ajilosun, Atikankan, Post-Office, New Garage, Basiri and Olokemeji.
