Fake Lawyer steals Supreme Court books from Ondo Court Library

A 52-year-old man, Chuks Osagbeue, who presented himself as a lawyer is currently standing trial at a Chief Magistrate's court sitting at Oke-Eda, Akure, Ondo State for allegedly stealing 12 copies of Supreme Court case books from Ondo State High Court of Justice's library.

Osagbeue, is facing a three-count charges of stealing , impersonation and unlawful possession of one Toyota Camry car on March 12, 2014.

The court presided over by Mr. M.A. Akinsanya, has however adjourned the matter till April 4, 2014 for mention.

The adjournment was sequel to what the court described as unresolved issues between the defence counsels initially handling the matter and the new lawyer who announced his appearance for the accused when the matter came up.

When the case was mentioned last Friday, a lawyer, Mr. Leonard Okoye announced his appearance for the accused person.

The trial Magistrate, Mr. Akinsanya said the absence of the first Lawyer handling the matter showed lack of respect to the court.

He therefore adjourned the case till April 4, 2014 for mention and charged the lawyers who were in the matter before the new counsel to resolve their difference before the next hearing.

The prosecution had alleged that the accused, on March 12, this year, about 1pm at High Court of Justice Library, Akure, stole 12 copies of different volumes of Nigeria Supreme court case books valued at four hundred thousand [N400,000]naira only property of Ondo State High Court of Justice.

It was also alleged that the accused presented himself as a lawyer in order to be given access to the Ondo State High Court of Justice Library, contrary to and punishable under Section 108 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The prosecution further told the court that the accused unlawfully had in his possession, one Toyota Camry Car with registration number, HC146 ABC suspected to have been stolen and hereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 430 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol 1 Laws of Ondo state of Nigeria 2006.
