In a unanimous decision, The Nigerian Senate granted the request of
President Goodluck Jonathan, to
extend the emergency rule in the troubled states of Yobe, Adamawa and
Borno in the North-eastern region of
Nigeria. This decision was formally communicated by the Senate Leader,
Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba. "That this Senate accordingly resolves to
approve the request of Mr. President and Commander-in-
Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation, to xtend the state of
emergency in Adamawa, Borno and
Yobe states on the same terms and conditions as earlier approved and
directed." Though agreeing with the need to expend the emergency rule
in the embattled states by another 6
months, the Senators submitted that there was still a legitimate cause
to meet with the Service chiefs
as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss the matter. For
some of the Lawmakers in the troubled states, while agreeing with the
general Senate that there is
need to expend the emergency period, they also argued that it is
important for the Nigerian Military
Officals and other security agencies in the area to review their
tactics. One of the Senators representing the affected areas, Senator
Bello Tukur, PDP Adamawa Central
worried about the welfare of the Security officials. "Some of the men
in the field need to be properly looked after so that they will not be
taxing people on
the checkpoints." Senator Ahmed Zanna, PDP Borno Central called the
relevant Security agencies involved in securing
the states to review their tactics. "If they can review their tactics
and imbue more willingness into their personnel; maybe if they don't
have more arms, they will be given more arms or better equipments to
pursue those insurgents." Senator Maina Ma'aji - Lawan of APC, Borno
North expressed confidence in the abilities of the
Security agencies. "The fact that the extension is given to the State
of Emergency is itself a vote of confidence in what
they are doing and they should propelled by this vote of confidence
into further positive action in
making sure that normalcy is returned in the shortest possible time."
Meanwhile, resumed clause by clause consideration of the National
Health Bill has again been
adjourned to another legislative day
