LG creation: EKSIEC, PDP tango over legitimacy of referendum

THE Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) has said that it has no legal encumbrance to perform Saturday's referendum on the proposed Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) being proposed by the Governor Kayode Fayemi-led government.

Chairman of EKSIEC, Mrs Cecilia Adelusi, while addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday said the referendum, as part of the procedures for the creation of LCDAs, will be conducted in 137 wards across 12 local governments, where the new councils were created.

She said the commission would use Option A4 for the conduct of the referendum, adding that the collated results in each LCDA would be transmitted to the state House of Assembly for legislative assent.

Reacting to the development, secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Tope Aluko, said "there is no legally constituted SIEC in Ekiti State. Ekiti people must stay away from Saturday's exercise because the government is committing illegality and such action cannot stand in the face of law."

Aluko added: "The governor is aware of the fact that the SIEC is not in existence and he has said on several occasions that that is the reason why he could not conduct local government elections, because the case is pending in court and the court is the Supreme Court."

Aluko posited that "the Supreme Court has not come out with a decision on the constitution of SIEC. Where has the SIEC got the power to operate? We advise the people of Ekiti to ignore the referendum because it is an exercise in futility. It is designed to confuse the people."
