MEMBERS of the Enugu State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, formally served impeachment notice on the deputy governor of the state, Sunday Onyebuchi, for alleged abuse of office and disrespect to the constituted authority.

Speaker of the assembly, Honourable Eugene Odoh, had, after presiding over the sitting of the assembly on Tuesday, ordered the Clerk of the assembly, Christopher Chukwurah, to serve the impeachment notice on him.

It was learnt that the impeachment notice was served the deputy governor in absentia, as he was said to have travelled out of Enugu for an undisclosed reason.

The embattled deputy governor had since gone underground since the impeachment process began on Tuesday, as many people, including journalists, who had gone to get his own side of the story of removal were turned back by security operatives at the gate.

However, it was further gathered that Onyebuchi was sighted in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Wednesday, where he was said to have gone to have close talk with Governor Rochas Okorocha, heightening speculations that he might cross over to the All Progressives Congress (APC) if he eventually threw in the towel.

Prior the impeachment process, Onyebuchi and his immediate family members had relocated to his private residence at the Government Reservation Area, Enugu, apparently to distance himself from his estranged boss at the Government House.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at both official and private residential quarters of the deputy governor, as a detached team of armed policemen and soldiers were seen in the two premises when visited on Wednesday.

The assembly is expected to resume sitting today.
