The Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Professor Mala Daura, on Tuesday, stated that the University has continued to experience influx of students from within and outside Nigeria in spite of the continuous security challenges in Borno State.

He observed that admission into the University has continued to be more and more competitive.

Daura stated this during the 33rd matriculation ceremony of the University marking the end of the 2013/2014 undergraduate admissions.

He said, "For every candidate admitted into the University, there are at least ten other qualified applicants who could not secure a place. I, therefore, commiserate with such candidates and wish them success in their future endeavours".

While welcoming the new students, the Vice Chancellor drew their attention to the oath they took.

"The oath is sacrosanct. You must adhere strictly to it as it provides the basis for a civilized University life. You are joining a reputable citadel of learning and you must, therefore, act in a manner consistent with continued maintenance of peace and stability in the system", he advised.

He further stated that the matriculating students included a total of five thousand three hundred and thirty two (5,332) candidates, who were admitted into part I and II degree programmes of the University through the University Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME), Direct Entry (DE) as well as placement of Ex-Remedial arts and science students.

The Vice Chancellor, who urged the students to make very good use of their stay in the University by working hard, making friends and shunning social vices like cultism, drug abuse and violent demonstration, added that they should make use of the available sporting facilities and join any of the numerous students' associations in their leisure time.

He urged them to seek counseling as the University have robust counseling center located within the hostel premises for them to discuss whatever problems they may have in absolute confidence.

He adding that the University will do everything feasible to maintain law and order and combat criminal tendencies.
