Speaker urges youths’ participation in politics

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, says more youths across the country must start participating in politics and governance.

He said on Friday that if the youth participate early in governance, there would be enduring change in the running of the federation.

Ikuforiji spoke during the visit of a youth group ─ National Youth Council of Nigeria ─ to his office in Alausa, Ikeja.

He said, "Young men and women of this nation must step up their participation in politics and governance to ensure enduring change in the running of the federation.

"The youth must come out now and be part of the changes in their fatherland. They should shun activities that are capable of jeopardising their future and the spirit of the nation. Instead, they should be part of the shaping of Nigeria."

Ikuforiji said the "lackluster attitude of youths" in leadership succession was worrisome and advised them to arrest the trend.

"The percentage of the youth taking up leadership positions in the country is abysmally low. If the youth, who possess 60 per cent of the voting power, can still remain powerless and be suffering, then you should blame yourselves for self-denials.

"No one can assume elective positions in the country without the consent of the youth. So, be mindful that your participation in politics and governance is all that is needed to turn this country around," he added.

The national leader of the youth council, Deolu George, said the youth were monitoring the trend in the country and would soon come out with a plan.

He added that the youth would support the Speaker should he declare his intention to contest the governorship election 2015.

He said, "The youth in Lagos and all over the country have been monitoring many leaders with progressive ideas. As one of them and considering your excellent performance in office, you are more than qualified to be the next governor of Lagos State."
