The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has said that his alleged plan to defect from the Labour Party to the Peoples Democratic Party remains a rumour.

He said because of this, he would not want to comment on it.

Mimiko spoke with journalists after he attended the National Executive Committee of the LP, which was held at its national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

"I don't want to react to that because it is a mere rumour," he said.

He, however, stated that he would support the second term ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan anytime the president expresses such determination to run.

Earlier, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, had defended Mimiko, saying that the party was not aware of his alleged plan to defect.

He said Mimiko was at the meeting as a member of the party and that anything contrary to that was not know to the members of the party.

Apart from this, he said there was no way the governor would have taken part in the meeting if he had ceased from being a member of the LP.

Nwanyanwu, who said the national convention of the party would hold in Akure on October 4, said he would step down as the national chairman of the party at the convention.

He said, "You have seen him (Mimiko) here. As I'm talking to,you, he is still a bonafide member of the Labour Party.

"We don't have to base everything on speculation. You can see that he is here and we have discussed everything concerning the Labour Party together. He is here live and direct."

Concerning his desire to step down as the chairman of the party, he said he was doing so on personal ground.

Nwanyanwu said having led the party for more than 10 years, it was time for him to step aside and allow other people to lead the party.

He said he was aware that no single individual had led any political party in the country since independent for 10 years, he however said that he had made up his mind to take a break.er the control of the members of the Boko Haram sect.‎
