As schools in Lagos State prepare to resume on Monday, the government says it has lined up a series of sensitisation meetings for school managements on how to manage the risks associated with the Ebola Virus Disease.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said this on Tuesday in Lagos at a meeting with Tutors-General and Permanent Secretaries of all the six education districts in the state.

Oladunjoye said the sensitisation was in furtherance of measures to curtail the spread of the virus among pupils of the state.

She noted that principals of public schools from the six education districts as well as Education Secretaries and Head Teachers of public schools in the state would be sensitised on Wednesday, September 17 (today), while proprietors of private schools will be sensitised on Thursday, September 18.

She said, "The government will instruct them to identify an Ebola Virus Disease Focal Officer in each of the schools who will be responsible for surveillance and health monitoring as well as the provision of adequate environmental sanitation, including clean toilets and premises in their school.

"The sensitisation will also dwell on the provision of running water, soap and the encouragement of frequent hand washing among pupils and the arrangement of prompt referral of a sick person to the nearest health institution for treatment."

Oladunjoye added that at the end of each sentisation, environmental and personal hygiene measures such as the training and sensitisation of pupils, vendors, teachers and non-academic staff on the virus and how to avoid it would be emphasised.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the state Universal Basic Education Board, and Teachers' Establishment and Pensions Office.
