We won’t allow thugs in Osun election — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday assured the people of Osun State that the August 9 governorship election in the state would be peaceful.

He dared political thugs to attempt to disrupt the election and be dealt with by security operatives to be deployed for the election.

The President, who said this at the PDP mega rally in Osogbo City Stadium, added that despite protests by some parties, he would make sure that Osun State was well-policed during the election.

Jonathan also restated his commitment to ensuring that the votes of Nigerians count.

He said, "Some parties are even going to court saying that on the Election Day, all the security operatives should be removed. We will recall that during the 2011 elections, 10 youth corps members were killed. We will not allow that to happen again.

"So, for anybody to think that government would fold its hands and allow miscreants to take over the streets of Osun State and cause havoc; that person is deceiving himself. We will make sure that Osun State is properly policed.

"Anybody who calls himself a thug or militant whatever named you call yourself, if you find himself in Osun State that day; be rest assured that the security operatives will deal with you according to the law. Because we must show the world that we are capable of governing ourselves and that we are able to elect who will rule us.

"Our votes must count: one man, one vote; one woman, one vote; one youth, one vote."

The President also told the crowd that the Federal Government needed maximum cooperation from the Osun State Government to bring development to every part of the state and boasted that the PDP was the only party in Nigeria that had the credentials of a democratic party.

"Omisore and the government at the centre will work together to develop Osun State. All we need from you is your votes. We need you to elect Omisore on August 9. Bring Omisore to us as your governor and leave the rest for us," he said.

The President had earlier congratulated Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who turned 60 on Saturday, and asked the people of Osun State to give him the victory of the PDP at the polls as a birthday gift.

Also speaking at the rally, the National Chairman, PDP, Adamu Mu'azu, said the PDP had patiently waited for the Osun election, describing it as an opportunity for the party to take back its mandate that was taken away through the court.

The Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, said next Saturday, it would be the turn of the Osun people to do what the Ekiti people did on June 21.

PDP's Ayo Fayose had defeated the incumbent Kayode Fayemi in a landslide.

Anenih urged the Osun electorate to vote for the PDP and the party would take them back to the mainstream of Nigerian politics.

He said, "Omisore was in prison when he was elected as a senator and God released him to be a senator. Now, God has released him to become governor of Osun State."

Also speaking, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, said they were in Osogbo to enlist Osun State as a PDP state.

He said Omisore performed creditably well when he was in the National Assembly, and pledged that the Senate and the House of Representatives would give Osun people all the support they needed to make sure their mandate was not stolen.

The Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, stated that just as he did in Ekiti, he had brought the registration form to register Omisore into the forum ahead of the August 9 election.

He also said the forum would assemble the best Senior Advocates of Nigeria to defend the mandate that Osun people would give Omisore.

Akpabio however, said PDP's victory would be a landslide and would be clear in such a way that there wouldn't be need for any court action.

However, former National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, on Satuday accused Jonathan of using security agents to manipulate elections in favour of the PDP.

Akande, who condemned the use of soldiers for election duties, also accused the President of using security personnel to aid removal of duly elected governors in the opposition.

The former governor of Osun State said this on Saturday at a reception organised for him by the Ila-Ifedayo-Boluwaduro Federal Constituency on his political success.

He said in parts, "The PDP and the Presidency have begun to destroy the opposition all over Nigeria by using massive federal powers to impeach governors and fully arming the Police and soldiers to protect and cover up their corrupt leaders, while fraudulently manipulating the wishes of Nigerians at the polls with absolute impunity.

"The present ruling PDP is already toeing this line at the risk of our hard earned democracy for which some of our compatriots paid the supreme sacrifice.

"With PDP in power, votes do not count and, therefore, the electorate are not important in PDP's culture. That is why Nigeria has been sinking and failing under PDP governments. This present regime is the worst. Surely, this Jonathan's presidency is a political armed robber."

The APC chief condemned the deployment of operatives of the Department of State Security in the state who, he said, had started harassing the people by shooting to scare them away when there was no justification for that.

He said, "In the recently held governorship election in Ekiti state, hundreds of APC supporters and leaders were hounded into detention at the eve of the election, only for the Federal Government to hoodwink the global community to believe that the election was free and fair, when in truth the process had been skewed in favour of the PDP in the pre- election processes.

"The same scenario is playing out again in Osun, with the militarisation of the state by men of the State Security Services, who are shooting sporadically everywhere in order to scare away the voters and intimidate our people before elections."

Meanwhile, the APC on Saturday accused top members of the PDP in Osun and some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission of planning to rig the election.

The APC alleged that some workers in the Information Technology Unit of INEC had handed over the state's electoral register to an unidentified aide to a top PDP national official in order to disenfranchise many voters.

In a statement on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary, APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said, ''For those who may see this as outlandish, they should recall that an INEC official tampered with the voter register used during the last governorship election in Anambra State to remove the names of many voters.''

According to the party, the plan to tamper with the electoral register for Osun, coupled with INEC's alleged delay to issue Permanent Voter Cards to registered voters in the state, especially those who were APC members, indicated the desperation of the PDP to win the election "at all cost."

Mohammed said, "The truth is that the PDP knows it cannot win a free and fair election in Osun state. Everything, so far, points to the fact that our party will win by a landslide, if the election is free, fair, credible and transparent.

"In fact, a highly-credible opinion poll carried out by the globally-recognised TNS-RMS shows that the APC leads among voters in the state by 73 per cent, compared to a paltry 19 per cent for the PDP.

"Apparently stunned by the reality on the ground, as against the propaganda by the PDP, the party's candidate, Iyiola Omisore, quickly conjured his own opinion poll, purportedly carried out by USAID, showing that he is leading the APC candidate and incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola."

When contacted, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, told one of our correspondents that the claim by the APC was untrue.

Agbaje stated that the commission gave voter registers to all the contesting political parties since July 9 and did not give any separate register to any PDP chief or member.

He said, "If the APC is sure of its allegation, it should make public the name of the PDP national official.

"I said it on Friday that INEC was not conniving with any party. We don't have any favourite among them. Our determination is to conduct a very transparent election. Nobody with genuine permanent voter card will be disenfranchised. We will ensure that enough election materials are supplied to all voting points and they will be there very early."
