A near tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday, in Minna, Niger State capital, following a robbery attack on the  Deputy Speaker of the state  House of Assembly, Honourable Gambo Bala, by some dare-devil men of the underworld, who were said to have held him and members of his family hostage for about two hours  at his official residence in Abattoir area of the city.

The robbers, according  to the Nigerian Tribune findings, who were said to have been fully armed, allegedly scaled through the fence of the residence around Tahir Village  at about 2:15 am and carted away unspecified sums of money running into several thousands of Naira and personal belongings which included computer lap tops, Ipad, Gold Wrist watch, handsets and his wife's jewelry boxes, all totaling several millions of Naira.

It was further learnt that the suspected  robbery gang fled the scene unchallenged  by some three policemen, who were said to have slept off while on duty post at the building, during which time the gangsters allegedly lucked them up at their duty post and carried on with their robbery operation.

An insider source informed the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday in Minna, that no sooner the robbers fled the scene that a complaint was received by the Divisional Police Officer, G.R.A. Police Division, Minna, Mr. Eze Nwaeze, a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The source, who craved for anonymity in a brief chat with the  Nigeria Tribune, further disclosed that the D.P. O. was visibly irked not only by the negligence of his men, adding that his division was also caught  unaware by the criminal activity of the suspected hoodlums, against the backdrops of his regular patrol of the area.

And in an encounter with the D.P.O. on Sunday,  he told newsmen that since his assumption of duty at the division about six months ago that he had personally been involved in the Police patrol of the communities under his jurisdiction, after which some prominent persons residents in the areas had paid him courtesy call at the station.

Nwaeze also noted that he has also reciprocated the gesture  by visiting them individually and collectively with a view to getting acquainted with their security needs and possible  assistance in order to avoid this type of ugly incident.
