NAFDAC to assist pharmaceutical industries export medicine to China, India

National  Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has said that it is poised to encourage  pharmaceutical companies in the country export their products to foreign countries like India and China.

Speaking with journalists after a top management team of the agency led an inspection visit on production of orthodox, herbal and drugs for vetinary purposes to one of leading pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria, Tuyil Pharmaceutical Industries, located in Ilorin, at the weekend, the director general of the agency,  Paul Orhii, said the agency was not created only to close down industries or destroy fake goods.

The NAFDAC boss, who said if pharmaceutical companies conform with international standard, Nigeria would not only become self sufficient in the supply of essential medicine but exporters of medicine, "instead of the current situation where we are neck deep in importing of medicine"

He said the agency, with its reach and collaboration with international organisations like World Health organisation (WHO), would deploy expertise of its professionals with international experience to assist Nigerian pharmaceutical companies produce improved product with international  standard, adding that the agency would also provide enabling environment for the industries to enable them do business the right way.

"When I assumed office, more than 70 per cent of essential medicine needed in Nigeria were imported into the country because most pharmaceutical companies were below standard. Thus, we encouraged these industries to upgrade their facilities in size and quality to meet international standard. Tuyil is one of the companies that responded to the call as it is even being used as training ground for NAFDAC staff.

"We are committed to assist pharmaceutical companies to attain highly coveted WHO standard and we'll continue to work with them", he said.

The NAFDAC boss, who expressed satisfaction with staff, operations and products of the pharmaceutical outfit, described Tuyil company as one of Nigeria's pharmaceutical companies that had adopted needs of Nigerians with production of products capable of reducing infant and maternal mortality.

He also said that his findings were in line with transformation currently embarked upon in pharmaceutical companies by the agency and transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He assured the agency would, without delay, evaluate the products of the company submmited for the agency's registration and approve the registration as soon as the evaluation shows that the products meet the required standard.

Also speaking, Tuyil's Superintendent Pharmacist, Gbenga Bambe, said that the company expanded its scope of drug production to produce standard drugs that meet various needs more accessible in the country.

He said the company started with four products of (tablets), adding that it has now expanded with the making of syrups, veterinary, herbal and bottled water products in addition with more tablet products. 

Bambe urged NAFDAC to give an accelerated approval to the registration of new products of the company submitted for the registration.
