INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on Monday that the commission was committed to ensuring hitch-free general elections in 2015.

Jega, who spoke in Abuja at the opening of a three-day workshop, tagged, 'Training of Trainers', organised by the commission for various political parties in the country, said part of the commission's means of achieving its dream was by training political parties in order to develop on their electoral skills.

The workshop has as its theme, 'Role and Responsibilities of Political Party Agents on Election Day'.

Jega, who acknowledged that such training of political parties was part of INEC's responsibilities, said the commission's electoral policies had witnessed improvements since the 2011 general elections.

He said, "As you are no doubt aware, it is part of the responsibility of INEC to assist political parties to develop on their electoral skills.

"Since the 2011 general elections, improvements have been made in the electoral policies of the commission, the objective being to ensure a more efficient and hitch-free electoral service delivery in the 2015 general elections.

"Many of the reforms and innovations in the electoral process of the commission have been radically different from what many of us used to know.

"The only way to keep political parties abreast and up to date with these reforms is not only through constant communication and interaction but in addition, through periodic training and re-training of members of political parties."

Participants at the workshop are expected to train members of their political parties the lessons they would learn during the exercise.

Jega said the commission intended to organise continuous training for political parties to ensure that they were kept abreast of international best practices regarding conduct of elections.
