The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday in Kano, urged Nigerians to support ongoing anti-corruption campaign by various government agencies in the country, to ensure its success.

Chairman of EFCC, Alhaji Ibrahim Lamorde, made the call at the opening of a one-day workshop on "Economic Crimes" organised by the commission for journalists in the North-West zone.

Lamorde was represented at the occasion by Mr Osita Nwaja, the Deputy Director in charge of Public Affairs in the commission.

"The reality is that regardless of the efforts of the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies, without the people embracing this fight, lasting success will remain a mirage," he said.

He said that the commission was aware of the danger which the wave of insurgency and cross-border crimes posed to the collective destiny of Nigerians.

"This challenge calls for concerted effort by law enforcement agencies and the entire citizenry.

"As a commission, we have stepped up financial intelligence and tracking of illicit transactions across our borders," he added.

According to Lamorde, the policing of the major entry and exit points in the country have recorded the seizure of huge sums of money, especially at the three major airports in Lagos, Kano and Port-Harcourt.

He disclosed that some of the suspects arrested in connection with the seizures and other cases had been prosecuted and convicted.

"The EFCC is unwavering in its determined effort to bring to a logical conclusion, many of the cases that it investigated in other sectors, including pension and oil subsidy cases.

"I expect the media to lend its investigative skills to helping the EFCC to fight corruption by exposing incidences of graft and drawing attention to some of the inherent challenges to the anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria," he stated.

Lamorde stated that the workshop was organised in view of the importance the commission attached to the role of the media in the fight against corruption and economic crimes.
