APC, PDP disagree over deployment of DSS operatives

The ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State have expressed disagreement on the deployment of operatives of Department of State Service in the state.

The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, described the conduct of the DSS operatives as unsavoury.

But the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Mr. Bola Ajao, on Thursday, said the DSS would not do anything outside the law.

The PDP spokesperson also said that the DSS deployed a large number of its officials in the state because President Goodluck Jonathan would visit the state on Saturday.

According to him, the APC were afraid of the presence of lawful security agents because they had things to hide.

Oyatomi, however, said the shooting into the air by some of the DSS officials in some communities of the state, on Wednesday, was condemnable.

He said that since there was no crisis, the security agents had no reason to shoot into the air with the aim of scaring away residents of the state.

The APC spokesperson said, "After the Ramadan fast, Osun State woke up to sporadic gunshots fired by security agents practically announcing their presence that had been anticipated from widespread reports in the media, which indicated that the PDP intended to jolt the citizens with fierce-looking armed and uniformed men to scare citizens in order to rig the August 9 governorship election.

"However, citizens in Osogbo and elsewhere were unimpressed by the show of force by these armed gunmen who had earlier been sighted gathering at the DSS office along Gbongan-Ibadan Road, Osogbo.

"On Thursday, however, the DSS operatives got a shocker around 5pm in the evening along Oke-Fia when they fired into the air and the people on the streets began to herald the each round of shots with the shouts of 'Aregbesola, APC.'"
