2014 Commonwealth Games End Today

The ongoing 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland will climax today with Team Nigeria on course to make the games Nigeria's best ever Commonwealth games. The team is currently sitting at the eighth position on the commonwealth games medals table with 32 medals comprising 10 gold, eight silver and 14 bronze.

The team continued with their impressive showings at the Games yesterday, winning two more gold medals in the Powerlifting. Nigeria's Para-athletes dominated the powerlifting event winning gold medals in both the heavyweight and the lightweight categories. Esther Onyema first started the breakthrough for Team Nigeria, winning gold in her lightweight category before Loveline Obiji made it a double gold. Obiji's win was remarkable, because she set a new world record with a 144.0kg best lift to win the gold.

With all the Nigerian relay teams making it to the finals of their respective races, the country's chances of winning more gold medals is still very much alive.

The Nigerian relay athletes were superb and showed that they have good prospects of winning a medal in their races. The women's relay team even without the reigning Commonwealth Games queen of the track, Blessing Okagbare, had no difficulty finishing Heat one of the women's 4x100m relay event with a time of 44.13seconds to make the finals. The women relay team are Lawretta Uzoh,Gloria Asumnu, Patience George and Dominique Duncan.

In the men's category Ogho-Oghene Egwero, Monzavous Edwards, Obinna Metu and Mark Jelks all proved worthy ambassadors of their country in men 4x100m race, finishing in second position behind a Jamaican team that had world record holder, Usain Bolt running for them. In the Triple Jump event, two Nigerians made the finals, Tosin Oke finished first with a 16.75m leap and Olu Olamigoke place 5th with a 16.46m leap as well. Tosin is the defending champion of the Triple Jump event and would be hoping to replicate his achievement at the last Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Blessing Okagbare recorded an enviable feat at the Games, winning a sprint double gold in the 100m and 200m events. She also recorded the fastest time in the Games history, winning the 100m event with a time of 10.85secs.

The team also won three gold medals in wrestling through Aminat Adeniyi, Odunayo Adekuoroye and weightlifter Maryan Usman in the ongoing Glasgow games.

At the last Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India 2010, which adjudged Nigeria's best outing in the history of the Games, the team won eleven gold, ten silver and fourteen bronze medals, thereby finishing ninth overall.
