Plateau workers protest non-payment of wages

Aggrieved workers of Jos North Local Government Council in Plateau State have staged a protest over the non-payment of their two months outstanding salaries and other entitlements.

The workers in the early hours of Tuesday blocked the council secretariat preventing people from going in to transact business.

The protesting workers had earlier blocked the entrance to the council secretariat to prevent the interim chairman and other senior members of staff of the council from gaining entry into the secretariat.

One of the workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being victimised, said workers were being owed two months salary and other entitlements. He regretted that the management cared less about their welfare.

He said, "We are being owed November and December 2013 salaries. We are also being owed entitlements of three years as well as other unpaid repatriation entitlements," said the worker.

"We have channelled our complaints, which included lack of promotion of workers through the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, but no action was taken.

"The council has a lot of money in its purse, but the interim chairman has said the money is just for project execution. Wase Local Government Council, which also has an interim chairman, had cleared all outstanding entitlements. So I wonder why in Jos North we cannot be paid," he further said.

The Chairman of Jos North Local Government, Mr. Yakubu Dung, however, said that the workers were not on strike, stressing that they were just gathering to be addressed by the leadership of the workers' union.

He said that the council was seriously addressing the plight of the workers, adding that the leadership of NULGE was in dialogue with the management.

The Chairman of the council, Mr. Danjuma Sanda, was not available for comments, while his mobile telephone was switched off when our correspondent called him.
