The PDP in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Thursday and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Kola Oluwawole, said "it is height of illegality for the Assembly to increase the number of proposed local governments from 18 to 19 when referendum was conducted for 18 local governments."
He said: "We are still in court challenging the legality of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) and the body went ahead to organise an illegal referendum.
''The Assembly added more illegality to an illegal act by increasing the number of the councils. We are restating the fact that both SIEC and Assembly are into illegal acts.
"You cannot build something on nothing and we are law-abiding party and are calling on the people of the state to take note of what the outgoing government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is doing."
The House of Assembly had approved the creation of 19 additional councils in the state following the adoption of the report of its ad-hoc committee set up to work on an executive bill seeking the creation of the new councils.
The committee, according to one of its members, Ayodeji Odu, representing Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency 11, justified the increase of the local councils saying it was "based on the consideration of a petition submitted by the people Kajola/Oreniwa in Ikole Local Government Area."
The Majority Leader of the House, Mr Churchill Adedipe, had moved the motion for the approval of the report and the result of the referendum conducted by EKSIEC last Saturday, saying "the result of the referendum conducted was a clear indication that Ekiti people were in full support of the exercise."
The House had also approved that the new councils be known as "Local Councils Development Areas" pending the final approval by the National Assembly.
